The Merging Technologies Quartet

Merging Technologies has done the recording industry a great favor. The Swiss company, not much larger than Yarlung Records, is run by a small group of dedicated engineers and designers who took the original Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology developed by Philips and Sony and made it usable for record labels. To Claude Cellier, Dominique Brulhart, Loïc Andrieu, Bertrand Van Kempen (at Merging Technologies near Lausanne) and Chris Hollebone (in London) we say a most hearty thank you. Not only did Merging create the first user-friendly method of recording in 256fs (or Quad DSD as music writer David Robinson affectionately calls it) using Horus or Hapi converters, but they created the Pyramix software bundle that enables us to create tracks and adjust volume in Native DSD. Yarlung is indeed grateful to Merging Technologies. Not only did David Robinson loan us his Hapi and Pyramix software keys to make these transcriptions from our SonoruS Series of analog tapes, but Merging Technologies generously sponsored our second quartet of albums: the Merging Quartet.

Kevin Fitz-Gerald

Canadian pianist Kevin Fitz-Gerald performs in concert halls around the world as a soloist, has recorded with seven record labels including Yarlung Records, and performs regularly in partnership with other musicians including Patrick Gallois, Stephen Isserlis, Richard Stolzman, Petteri Iivonen, Alan Civil, Camilla Wicks, Midori Goto, Eudice Shapiro, Milton Thomas, Karen Tuttle, Donald McInnes, Ronald Leonard, and the Bartok, St. Petersburg and St. Lawrence String Quartets. Kevin also performs four-hands piano works with his wife Bernadene Blaha. In addition to his position as Professor of Piano Performance and Collaborative Arts at the USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, Mr. Fitz-Gerald is also a regular visiting artist teacher at the Banff School of Fine Arts, a frequent guest master class teacher at The Colburn School for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, and serves as visiting faculty at many other national and international music festivals and institutions throughout North America, South America, Asia and Australia. Kevin was born in Kelowna, British Columbia and received full scholarships to study at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, The Banff Centre School of Fine Arts and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto where his principal teachers were Marek Jablonski, Robin Wood and Alma Brock-Smith.

Yehuda Gilad

Maestro Yehuda Gilad’s appearances on the podium have garnered critical acclaim in the United States, Asia and Europe, where he has conducted throughout Spain, Sweden, Germany, Finland, and France. Yehuda especially appreciates Sergiu Celibidache and Leonard Bernstein, who worked often with Yehuda and generously shared their immense musical gifts. In 1987 he became the first Israeli born conductor to perform in China and has since conducted often in Beijing and Shanghai. Additionally Yehuda served as Music Director for the Colonial Symphony of New Jersey from 1988 to 2003. Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with many leading musicians including Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham, Sarah Chang, Ann Marie McDermott, Pepe Romero, Joseph Kalichstein, Michelle DeYoung, Vladimir Feltsman, Misha Dichter, Jeannine Altmeyer and now Sasha Cooke. Yehuda serves not only as Music Director of The Colburn Orchestra, but he also teaches and runs the clarinet department at Colburn Conservatory. As a clarinetist and chamber musician, Yehuda presents master classes at Curtis, Kings College in Sweden, the Winter Festival in Spain, Toronto’s Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Mannes College, the Manhattan School of Music, and Juilliard among others. Yehuda also serves as Professor of Music at the Thornton School at USC. Yehuda moved to the United States in 1975 and continued his studies with Giora Feidman, Mitchell Lurie, and Herbert Zipper, who served as Yehuda’s principal conducting teacher. Yehuda performs regularly, and enjoys participating in many of the top music festivals across the country, including the Marlboro Music Festival and Santa Barbara’s Music Academy of the West. He also founded the Yoav Chamber Ensemble, which performed at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and Merkin Hall in New York, and the Colburn Woodwind Chamber Players, which toured Germany, China and the United States. Yehuda has also played a major role in the founding of several notable music festivals. From 1982 to 1993 he directed the Malibu Strawberry Creek Music Festival, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “a summer festival in which inspired, enthusiastic performance and intelligent varied programming are the norm.”

The Colburn Orchestra

Celebrating its tenth anniversary season in 2012-2013, the COLBURN ORCHESTRA is the flagship ensemble of the Colburn Conservatory of Music. Under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Yehuda Gilad, the Colburn Orchestra performs for Southern California audiences at venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ambassador Auditorium, Royce Hall, Segerstrom Concert Hall and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge.

Since its inception, Gilad and the esteemed faculty at Colburn have invited leading guest artists to perform with the Colburn Orchestra to mirror a professional orchestral experience. Previous visiting conductors include James Conlon, Jamie Laredo, Sir Neville Marriner, Kurt Masur, Nicolas McGegan, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, among others. Guest soloists include violinists Joshua Bell, Cho-Liang Lin, Elmar Oliveira and Pinchas Zukerman (play/conduct); soprano Elizabeth Hynes; mezzo-sopranos Sasha Cooke and Michelle DeYoung; pianist Vladimir Feltsman and saxophonist Claude Delangle. Esteemed artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich and Itzhak Perlman actively worked with the orchestra during its inaugural year.

 

Petteri Iivonen

Petteri Iivonen was born in 1987, and began to study the violin at the Helsinki Conservatory when he was four years old. Petteri also studied the piano as a student and remains an accomplished pianist. Petteri won the Erkki Melartin chamber music competition when he was fifteen: Petteri’s nuanced talent as a musical collaborator (as a partner who listens) remains easy to hear even in his violin solo and concerto repertoire. Since 1997, Petteri’s principal teachers have been Tuomas Haapanen and Hagai Shaham. Petteri continues to study despite his increasingly busy concert schedule of solo recitals and concertos in the United States, Germany, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, Israel, Portugal, Spain and Italy. Iivonen has performed with Paul Neubauer and David Grossman of the New York Philharmonic, and raised money for the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a special Choral room benefit at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Petteri was invited to perform with pianist Ryan MacEvoy McCullough to open The Broad Stage in Santa Monica in 2008. Last year Iivonen performed the Tchaikovsky violin concerto under the baton of Zubin Mehta, and based on this performance was immediately invited to play the gala opening night concert with the Israel Philharmonic with whom Petteri performed the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1. As I write these notes, Petteri is preparing for a South American tour with Zubin Mehta and is scheduled for more concerto performances with major orchestras in Europe, especially the Tchaikovsky, Bloch and Sibelius concertos for which Petteri has become famous. Immediately after playing in South America, Petteri flies to Los Angeles to join Kevin Fitz-Gerald for a private concert and dinner in the home of Ann Moore Mulally to celebrate the release of this album. While much of Petteri’s playing is exceptionally beautiful, he never tries to make the sound "pretty," I have heard very few violinist’s with Petteri’s ability to control color and timbre, and even fewer who use this ability for such musical and appropriate ends. For our recording Petteri plays a Ferdinandus Gagliano violin, built in 1767, kindly loaned to him by OKO Bank Art Foundation. Kevin plays New York Steinway serial number 567908.

Sasha Cooke

New Yorker music critic Alex Ross praised Sasha Cooke in Doctor Atomic at The Met for her “fresh, vital portrayal, bringing a luminous tone, a generously supported musical line, a keen sense of verbal nuance, and a flair for seduction.” She then made her European debut singing Kitty Oppenheimer in Doctor Atomic at English National Opera. In addition to her successes in the standard operatic and concert repertoire, Sasha has premiered works by Jack Beeson, William Bolcom, John Corigliano, Luigi Dallapiccola, John Musto and Augusta Read Thomas, among others. Sasha includes music by American composers in every recital program and next year celebrates some of her favorites on the opera stage as well. Next season Sasha performs Showboat at Houston Grand Opera, The Aspern Papers at Dallas Opera and the title role in the world premiere of Mark Adamo’s The Gospel of Mary Magdalene at San Francisco Opera. Sasha has performed with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Houston, Kansas City, Lyon, Los Angeles, Dallas, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Denver, Aspen, San Diego, Baltimore and Hong Kong as well as the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Conductors include Marin Alsop, Ji?í B?lohlávek, Alan Gilbert, Bernard Haitink, Manfred Honeck, Jeffrey Kahane, James Levine, Robert Spano, Leonard Slatkin, Pinchas Steinberg, Michael Stern, Michael Tilson Thomas, Edo de Waart and Jaap van Zweden.

Sophisticated Lady Jazz Quartet

A traditional quartet rooted in the sounds, styles and history of jazz, Sophisticated Lady brings a fresh approach to this music. With a mix of original compositions and new interpretations of classic repertoire this quartet has a sound and aesthetic that is both familiar and new. Sophisticated Lady formed when the musicians met during their graduate studies at USC. Fortuitously so, as it led them to embark upon a creative recording session with the arts/audiophile label Yarlung Records at USC’s Brain and Creativity Institute in its new Camilleri Hall. The session was a throwback to yesteryear minimalist recording techniques with the advantages of modern technology and yielded enough repertoire for two upcoming releases (Fall 2014 & 2015).

The members of Sophisticated Lady have shared the stage and studio locally and around the globe with such notable artists as The Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, Wynton Marsalis, Jane Monheit, Walter Smith, Bobby Sanabria, Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Stefon Harris, Monica Mancini, Stevie Wonder, Take 6, John Williams, John Hendricks, Bob Mintzer, Regina Carter, Chick Corea, Alan Pasqua, Plas Johnson, Diana Krall, The Coasters, Fitz and The Tantrums, Henry Mancini Big Band and many more!

Antonio Lysy

Antonio Lysy, an artist of international stature and dedicated pedagogue, has performed as a soloist in major concert halls worldwide. He has appeared with such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestras of London, Camerata Academica of Salzburg, Zurich Tonhalle, the Zagreb Soloists, Orchestra di Padova e il Veneto, Israel Sinfonietta, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Les Violions du Roi. He has collaborated with distinguished conductors including Yuri Temirkanov, Charles Dutoit, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Sandor Vegh, and Kees Bakels, and continues to perform regularly both as a solo, and chamber music artist. Lysy enjoys exploring the versatility of the cello's voice, from Baroque to electric, and is committed to projects which enrich his diverse interests in music. The currently touring show, "Te Amo, Argentina", a personal journey through the heart and soul of Argentina's fascinating culture, featuring solo cello and chamber works, dance, film, and spoken word, has met with widespread acclaim. Tango dancers Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo and the Te Amo, Argentina Ensemble, join Lysy in this inspiring multimedia experience. Te Amo, Argentina is based on Lysy's CD with Yarlung Records - "Antonio Lysy at the Broad - Music From Argentina", featuring the works of Piazzolla, Golijov, Ginastera, Bragato, and Schifrin. This CD won a Latin Grammy Award. A recent review on Musicangle.com declares it "among the most beautiful recordings of cello and piano you are likely ever to hear", and The Absolute Sound recognized it as one of the 40 best recordings of all time. Highlights of his recent work include an extraordinary recital, broadcast on live radio, celebrating Bach and the cello through performances on baroque, acoustic, and electric cellos at the Los Angeles County Museum of the Arts. A recent program with Les Violons du Roi in their new and fabulous hall in the heart of Quebec city, led "Le Soleil" to remark: "Antonio Lysy shone and enchanted his audience in an arrangement for cello and strings of Schubert's Arpeggione". He presented a multimedia concert with pianist and comedian Jean Marchand, showcasing the history of his Carlo Tononi cello on its the 300th birthday. He has performed in recitals in New York and Los Angeles with pianist Rascal Rogé, and enjoys frequent collaborations with distinguished fellow faculty at UCLA's Royce and Schoenberg Hall, and Colburn's Zipper Hall. Other recent performances include a solo Bach recital at the Uffizi Library in Florence, Italy; two programs with Vladimir Ashkenazy and his sons in Lugano, Switzerland; a concerto performance with the American Youth Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles; and touring the States, Canada, Italy, and Argentina with the show 'Te Amo, Argentina'. His love and commitment to chamber music is demonstrated by his musical directorship and founding in 1989, of the annual Incontri in Terra di Siena Chamber Music Festival in Tuscany, Italy (www.itslafoce.org). Distinguished artists from around the globe take part in this idyllic summer retreat, which is crowned by performances in medieval fortresses, palazzi, and churches in the Southern Tuscan region. Lysy has recorded extensively for CBC Radio, BBC Radio, Classic FM, and other European radio networks. His live recording of solo cello repertoire by Bach, Berio, Henze, and Walton, released on the Pelléas label, is "...some of the most beautiful Bach ever heard" (– La Presse, Montréal). In addition, he has recorded for the Claves, Dinemec Classics, and Fonè labels. In January 2012, he recorded and premiered the reworked Eric Zeisl cello concerto with the UCLA Philharmonia directed by Neal Stulberg. This cd is available on the Yarlung Records label. In the summer of 2003 Lysy accepted the position of Professor of Cello at University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to moving to the United States, he held a professorship at McGill University in Montréal. He was also, for a number of years, visiting professor at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland. He now resides with his family in Los Angeles.
